NACHHALTIGE ENTWICKLUNG

Second European Week of Soya from 19 to 26 September

Week of Soya

Bringing European consumers a taste of soya and sustainability!

With the encouragement of Dr Rajendra Pachauri, Chairman of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and co-recipient of the Peace Nobel Prize in 2007.

Rajendra Pachauri

Dr Rajendra Pachauri was born in 1940 in India. He studied in India and then in North Carolina State University in the USA where he obtained PhD in Industrial Engineering and a PhD in Economics. He was appointed in 2002 head of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The IPCC published in 2007 its fourth assessment report on climate change with left no doubt over the human origin of global warning. The same year, Dr Rajendra Pachauri was awarded the Peace Nobel Price, together with the other scientists in the IPCC and former US Vice-President Al Gore for his movie 'An Inconvenient Truth'. In parallel to its activities within the Organisation of United Nations, Dr Pachauri is also the Managing Director of TERI, the Energy and Resources Institute in New Dehli, which also has an office in London and Antwerp. Dr Pachauri is a vegetarian not only for religious reasons, but also because he is convinced that a diet which is high in animal-based products has negative impacts on the environment.

Quotes :

"There is a large scope to reduce the share of animal products in modern diets, and to replace them with plant-based alternatives such as soy products. This would bring numerous benefits for human health and for the environment."

"Changes in diet represent a large part of the solutions to current environmental challenges, including soil and water pollution and climate change. As a matter of fact, producing a protein of vegetal origin, such as the ones contained in soy products, requires less water, less land and emits less CO2 than a protein of animal origin."

"Lifestyle changes would be a significant option for mitigating the emissions of greenhouse gases. Prominent in this regards would be the consumption of lower quantities of food of animal origin, because the animal-based food cycle today is very intensive in emissions of greenhouse gases."
