Established in January 2003, ENSA represents the interests of Natural soyfood.
The term "natural" refers to the production process used by ENSA members to produce non-dairy food (organic and conventional, such as drinks, desserts, spreads, cream, yoghurts and meat alternatives, etc.) using whole soybeans without any genetically modified material.
The founding principle of ENSA combines a belief in natural soy products and the use of sound science. ENSA seeks to raise awareness among EU citizens and promote the consumption of natural soy, which is an integral part of a healthy, balanced lifestyle.
ENSA is an association of internationally operating companies, ranging from large corporations to small, family-owned businesses.
To become a member, a company must sign up to ENSA's Ethical Charter.
The charter contains the four main founding principles of the association: to use natural production processes to produce foods which contain soy, to guarantee that products are GM-free, to not source soy which grew on land which was previously tropical rainforest and to support scientific research on soy.
ENSA members have also adopted "antistrust guidelines" to make sure that all their activities within ENSA are in compliance with EU competition rules.
The ENSA is a centre of expertise for:
- Up-to-date, accurate and as-objective-as-possible scientific information about soy products and their health benefits;
- Technical and product-related information on the product category of soyfood, which assists national and European regulatory bodies in drafting the rules necessary to provide a clear legislative framework for soy products;
- Positions on policy and regulatory issues of importance to its members at EU level.
The president of ENSA is Bernard Deryckere.
