ABOUT SOY

Soy and lactose intolerance

Lactose intolerance is the inability to properly digest milk sugar, also known as lactose, which is found in cow's milk, as well as in many milk derivatives.

Lactose intolerance, unlike a food allergy, does not affect the immune system, rather it is the body's intolerance to food.

it is the body's intolerance to food.Lactose intolerance results from a shortage of the enzyme lactase, which is normally produced by the cells that line the small intestine. Lactase breaks down milk sugar into simpler forms that can then be absorbed into the blood stream.

In cases of lactose intolerance, the body produces either no lactase or insufficient amounts and the lactose will, as a consequence, be fermented by intestinal bacteria. This gives rise to a number of disorders, such as flatulence, gastrointestinal complaints and diarrhoea.

About 75% of the world's population has lactose intolerance, and consequently problems in digesting milk sugar.

Depending on the cause and the severity of the lactose intolerance, the intake of lactose must be restricted to a greater or lesser extent.

Soya products represent a good alternative for those suffering from lactose intolerance, since they are completely lactose-free.
